Re “Math, Taught Like Football,” by John Urschel (Sunday Review, May 12):

Mr. Urschel has recognized a fundamental problem in mathematics education: Children are taught to endure math class, not enjoy it. While most children like brain teasers, puzzles and games, the mathematics they encounter in school often consists of repetitive exercises.

I was fortunate that my father shared engaging puzzles and problems with me and provided opportunities to explore and make discoveries.

Let’s offer students similarly thought-provoking mathematics. Then they are more likely to feel challenged and inspired.

Nancy BlachmanBurlingame, Calif. The writer is the founder of the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival.

  To the Editor:

Let’s start in elementary school and show everybody what math is and what it can do.

As a longtime teacher, I wanted kids to see math’s wonders and usefulness every day. This meant that math traveled beyond math class. We looked at it in history, in newspaper headlines, in home research. From Paul Revere’s ride to the temperature at Richard Byrd’s Antarctic base camp to cookie recipes, every day has a myriad of mathematical possibilities and wonder.

I had a rewarding moment when third graders in my care applauded and cheered at the conclusion of “Anno’s Mysterious Multiplying Jar.” Imagine that: 8-year-olds applauding factorials.

Susan OhanianCharlotte, Vt.The writer is the author of the children’s activity book “Day-by-Day Math.”

  To the Editor:

My wife and I recently hosted two Chinese foreign exchange high school students for a year. Both boys studied diligently, and one, Philip, was particularly proficient in math. He absolutely exulted in good grades.

Once, he came home from school holding a math test that had earned an “A” grade aloft, smiling broadly. A mental image flashed in my mind: an American schoolboy holding a football aloft in the end zone, ready to spike it.

I realized that “A” was indeed a touchdown for Philip. In America, we idolize athletes even as we are blasé about academic achievement. I love sports, and they certainly have a place in American culture, but it ought to be second place.
